The Western Australian Government is committed to supporting the development of international education in Western Australia and increasing the number of students coming to study in Perth.

Western Australia currently has more than 50,000 students from 147 countries living and learning in Perth and they are a key contributor to the Western Australian economy.  In 2017, the sector generated approximately $1.9 billion in export income for the State.

International education forms a key part of the State Government’s plan to grow and diversify the State’s economy.  It is estimated that currently:

  • the sector supports approximately 10,000 full-time jobs
  • one full-time job is created in Western Australia for every four international students
  • each international student attracts 1.5 visiting friends and relatives from overseas

However, the benefits of international education go well beyond the purely economic.  International students bring diversity and a cultural richness to our community helping to build the State’s links and relationships with other countries including our Asian neighbours.

The Western Australian Government is working on a range of actions to put Perth on the map as an education destination and increase the number of students coming to study in Perth, while creating new jobs in our economy.
