The facilitation and development of major resource projects is often challenging due to their scale, complexity and potential environmental, economic and social impacts.

As the Western Australian Government's lead agency for major resource, industry and infrastructure proposals, the department provides assistance to proponents to ensure projects are developed responsibly and efficiently.

The department can provide information on statutory requirements and manage and coordinate approvals applications across government. It can also assist with identifying the potential impacts of the proposal on matters including infrastructure, the environment and regional communities, and give advice on any social considerations that may arise.

When a proponent approaches the department to facilitate the development of their project, an assessment is made on the level of assistance that can be provided. The department will then nominate a project manager, who is responsible for working with the project proponent on early stage scoping work and establishing agreed timelines.

The appointment of a project manager means that a proponent can work with a single contact point within the department through every stage of the project management process. Proponents also benefit from the improved coordination of approvals and are better informed on all government related development considerations.
