The State Government has appointed a new Regional Director, Indonesia, as part of an expansion of Western Australia’s presence in the country.

Premier and State Development Minister Colin Barnett today announced experienced international business executive Christopher Barnes had been appointed to the role following an extensive recruitment process.

“Mr Barnes is highly qualified for this position, having worked in senior roles across government and the private sector with a focus on strategic engagement with Indonesia,” Mr Barnett said.

Mr Barnes has advised a number of Australian and international companies on doing business in Asia, held senior roles with the Commonwealth Bank and is a former national president of the Australia Indonesia Business Council.

He will lead an expanded trade and investment office in Jakarta that will include dedicated tourism and agriculture officers.

The Premier said the Government decided in January this year to adopt a new office model as it seeks to grow and diversify the State’s relationship with Indonesia.

"The new office model will focus efforts and resources where there is real potential for growth with our nearest trading partner,” Mr Barnett said.

"Indonesia’s proximity to WA and its emerging middle-class provide many opportunities for the State’s primary producers and tourism operators.”

Mr Barnes will begin work at the Department of State Development next week before heading to Indonesia.
